WEST COAST SQUARE DANCING
FLEXIBLE LEARNING
Caller/Teacher Information
Note to Callers:
In order to facilitate the “Flexible Learning Program” some minor adjustments have been made to the West Coast teaching order. The concept behind flexible learning is that rather than teach the curriculum in a strictly linear fashion, the course is designed to be delivered in three short modules. Module “A” is the longest, consisting of 5 lessons. It must be taken first as it contains all the basic elements that are repeated in every module. Modules “B” and “C” consist of 3 lessons each and can be taken in either order which allows the student to take a leave of absence from time to time as life demands and then pick up where they left off when they return without disrupting the class.
The first half hour of each lesson is dedicated to the review of the material from the previous module (either B or C). If a student has skipped that module they do not participate in this part of the lesson. The balance of the lesson is dedicated to teaching new material in conjunction with the basics learned in the “A” module and everyone participates. The previous module’s material should be avoided during this portion of the session.
A few calls/concepts are taught in both modules B & C. This was to facilitate the teaching of other related calls in each module and give the student a broader spectrum of calls at every level.
Two calls were added to the program in 2018. They are Turn Thru and Slide Thru. At the West Coast level we plan to restrict ourselves to using these calls from basic positions.
Using this program we are able to take in new dancers twice a year (A module) and then give them three opportunities to pick up the other two modules (B & C) during the season. Feedback has been positive to date and retention has been excellent so far which indicates that we have been able to meet the needs of our new dancers reasonably well.
